Sherwin-Williams Purdy
Organization: The Sherwin-Williams Purdy facility manufactures paintbrushes and roller covers.
Initiatives and accomplishments include:
- Since 2008, the Purdy facility has been a Star site as part of Oregon OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program (VPP), exemplifying the operation’s ongoing commitment to go above and beyond in addressing on-the-job safety and health.
- Demonstrating its commitment to employee engagement, the Purdy site, in 2024, developed an innovative method for measuring machine guarding. The method – a prosthetic hand – is used to show why machine guarding matters, the importance of following safety procedures, and what can happen if an employee’s hand is caught in a machine. The site’s Hazard Committee was instrumental in developing this tool.
- The Ergonomic Committee led a revamp of the site’s stretch-and-flex program with employee-led videos and posters. This effort included robust engagement of employees and commitment by managers.
- Members of the VPP, Ergonomic, Hazard, and Central Safety committees work together to reinforce safety and health efforts with their coworkers.
We put the safety and health of our employees first because:
We believe that when people feel supported and cared for, they can bring their best selves to work, creating a positive and productive environment for everyone. Our efforts to promote the safety, health, and well-being of our people reflect our unwavering commitment to drive employee engagement and performance while also recognizing that safety is the responsibility of every employee at our site.
Our safety committees are critical to our culture of safety and health because:
Engagement around safety makes all the difference in a successful safety program. Our safety committee members represent a diverse background of experience and perspectives from all shifts and departments. These committees bring people together to share ideas, address concerns, and create practical solutions that keep everyone safe and supported every day.
